Manasi Parekh was part of a large spiritual pilgrimage group organized by Sadhguru’s Isha Foundation. The group was traveling through Tibet to visit Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake.
On August 26, a sudden and catastrophic flash flood struck the Gyirong region along the Nepal-Tibet border. The deluge entirely submerged the Gyirong Port immigration center and wiped out critical infrastructure. In a chilling revelation, Manasi Parekh shared that she and her group were scheduled to be at that exact immigration building just hours later.
“We were 5 hours away from the place where the incident happened. A structure we counted on as a big, sturdy building was literally gone in moments. We easily could have been inside. Hum 24 ghanto se bach gaye… it could have been us.”
Calling it her “second lease on life,” the actress shared how deeply the tragedy affected her, noting that nearly 80 people from the broader Isha group were reported missing as the town was washed away.
Navigating Landslides: The 4-Hour Wait in Nyalam
Getting out of China post the disaster was a monumental challenge. With borders heavily affected and roads severely damaged, the evacuation process was fraught with obstacles.
Manasi Parekh detailed the exhausting route back to safety:
- The Nyalam Blockade: The group’s journey out of China came to a screeching halt when a massive landslide struck the Chinese town of Nyalam. Manasi and the other pilgrims were trapped inside their bus for four harrowing hours while waiting for authorities to clear the debris.
- The 40-Mile Journey: Once the road was slightly cleared, they embarked on a 40-mile bus ride toward the Nepal border.
- Walking Through Debris: Upon reaching the Nepal border, the group encountered yet another massive landslide. With no drivable roads left, they were forced to cross the hazardous, landslide-affected terrain on foot to reach the rescue buses waiting on the other side.
The “Bumpiest Bus Ride” to Kathmandu
The ordeal didn’t end at the border. Manasi Parekh described the next leg of the journey—a grueling 4-hour transit to Nepal’s capital—as the “bumpiest bus ride of our lives.” The roads downstream from the Tibet border into Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading were severely damaged due to the surging waters of the Bhote Koshi River.
Despite the physical and emotional exhaustion, Manasi remained overwhelmingly grateful. She noted that every obstacle was worth it because it meant returning to her family and finally getting to hold her daughter again in Mumbai.
